TECHNOLOGY TO PROTECT HUMAN LIFE

More than sixty people rescued in 2019 thanks to the work of the Italian Cospas-Sarsat Satellite Station

63 people rescued in 2019 through support provided to search and rescue authorities, deployed in as many as 19 countries in Europe and Africa. This is the balance of the Italian Cospas-Sarsat Satellite Station in the past year. An achievement that is the result of constant work carried out by specialized operators who, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, monitor emergency situations detected by Cospas-Sarsat satellites.

Another relevant figure is that of transmitters entered into the 406 MHz National Transmitter Database (managed by the Station itself), which, at the end of last year, reached the remarkable number of about 20,000 registered transmitters.

In the latter area, the most significant figure is the number of PLBs (personal-use radio transmitters), which showed a 12 percent increase over 2018, demonstrating the wide diffusion these tracking tools are having among users due to their multi-role use in maritime, aviation, and land.

Broadening the horizon to the last 5 years, the work carried out by the personnel of the Italian Satellite Station Cospas-Sarsat has enabled the rescue of a total of 359 people, involved in 110 dangerous situations.
